The verdict is in: denim on denim is okay. Who says so? The fashion Gods of course! The trend has been spotted everywhere from the covers of both Vogue Mexico and Brazil, which have their models styled in full on denim on denim outfit, to Chanel’s Resort 2013 collection having models coming down the runway in denim pants paired with matching denim jackets, and flowy denim dresses, to Ralph Lauren’s ad campaign having models styled in the denim trend aka “The Canadian Tuxedo” from head to toe; it’s safe to say the fashion elite approve. If you think this avant-garde styling is restricted only for the runway and editorials, because the “Canadian Tuxedo” is just too risqué, think not. The trend has leaked right off the runway and right onto the streets with celebrities such as Rihanna, Zoe Saldana, Alexa Chung, and even conservative dresser Olivia Palermo, have all been seen following this trend, a trend once seen as to grotesque to imagine.
In a time where mixing and matching prints and textures is popular, the matchy –matchy trend of denim on denim is literally the antithesis of the other trends of the season, making it quite interesting. But, from the realms of magazine, runway, and celebrities’ style, the fashion dictators have spoken, and The Canadian Tuxedo is off the faux pas list…for now.
