Josephine De La Baume, fashion’s ‘it’ girl is known for her modeling campaign for Agent Provocateur and marriage to Mark Ronson, known for her sultry yet eclectic mix of Parisian chic and quirky elegance never fails to catch attention with her looks. Her wardrobe masks that gamine yet casual glamour that the French pull off so well with stockings a clash of prints and Britpop influences her style is very hard to master but so insouciant. This year ivory silks mixed with geisha prints and corset inspired gowns have paced the catwalks, add that to mussed sexy bedhead waves and strawberry mauve lipstick and you can impersonate her daring style. She is usually seen at gallery openings and backstage at fashion shows wearing sheer black satin dresses or grown up floral dresses in her signature tousled look.

Beauty Trend Pretty Plaits

Pretty Plaits

The plait seems to be the most popular hairstyle this season. With many versatile styles, you can make your plait look pretty and unique, whether you choose to wear your hair loose or tied up. Adding a plait to your hair can transform your everyday hairstyle from plain and simple to stylish and chic. The classic French plait, the fabulous Fishtail, and the ultramodern Waterfall plait are currently trending in the hairstyling world. Each style produces a skilled and intricate design, but as complicated as they may appear, you can actually achieve the perfect plait in less than ten minutes. So even if you’re in a rush or just generally having a bad hair day, the plait will certainly light up your style. Celebrities such as Pixie Lott and Cheryl Cole have taken a huge liking to this fashionable hair trend and I can definitely say that I have too. So next time you go out, be adventurous with your hair, get plaiting and voilà!  You’ll have a style that is bound to give everybody hair envy.

Hair Trend Watch: Feather Freedom

Hair Trend Watch Feather Freedom

Freedom to experiment with our luscious locks becomes somewhat of a given every season as soon as the sun starts to shine and the white sand beaches start to call so… Alongside the fact that our summer is finally brightening up just as the threat of Autumn/Winter is nipping us at the ankles, why not prolong the summer spirit for as long as possible?

One of my favourite summer hair trends this year has to be the use of feather extensions which has infectiously spread from the distant world of celebrities’ right onto our own high streets. Not only are they sure to boost your style from drool to cool but they also create that summer festival allusion that can continue right on into autumn. And if you’re worried about appearing too out-there, many brands offer a range of styles to choose from, from natural to the more experimental tie-dye. So whether you’re reined in by work uniforms or jet-setting to the remainder of our summer festivals, there’s a style out there for everyone. Jennifer Hewitt and Miley Cyrus prove this flawlessly with Hewitt embracing the more experimental brights of the season and Cyrus going for the more bohemian au-natural. They are affordable, last through washes, don’t damage your hair AND easy to install. So what are you waiting for? Update your summer funk while the weather is peaking… no excuses people!

What does your suitcase say about you?

Friday, August 17th, 2012

What does your suitacase say about you?

If you’re heading to the airport this week to start your summer holiday you might want to think twice before shoving your swimsuit and sunscreen into a hold-all that’s seen better days. Research released today by leading airline Virgin Atlantic reveals that the luggage we carry and what we pack says a lot about the type of traveller we are, and also the type of person we are in general.

The study shows that one in five of us (20%) can’t remember the last time we bought new luggage, while more than half (55%) would only upgrade their suitcase if it was worn-out or broken.

At the other end of the scale are the luggage kings and queens, these are the one in ten (10%) people who admit to buying luggage to trump their travel companions. Young people are also influenced by the designer cases they see on the arms of celebs with a quarter (25%) of 16-24 year olds admitting they would buy new luggage to copy a celebrity.

Joe Thompson, General Manager of Airport Operations at Virgin Atlantic commented, “Virgin Atlantic carries over six million bags around the world each year and we have seen a lot of changes since our first flight in 1984. Gone is the standard suitcase and luggage is now seen as a fashion statement with many passengers checking in a variety of designs including leather holdalls, leopard print cases and designer trunks”.

But what does your luggage say about you? Virgin Atlantic www.virginatlantic.com has teamed up with leading behavioural expert Judi James www.judijames.com to put your suitcase under the microscope.

Designer trunks – Celeb owners: Karl Lagerfeld, Victoria Beckham, David Beckham, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Kim Kardashian

Designer trunks are on the rise with Virgin Atlantic seeing more and more passengers following in celebrity footsteps. Judi James comments: “For these passengers, luggage defines their achievements and their status in life and they believe all economy class passengers should stand aside in respect as they sweep through the airport in true A list style. This is the Greta Garbo of holiday makers, someone who is outwardly saying ‘I want to be alone’ although with all the matching designer gear and huge, blackout designer shades what they’re really saying is ‘Look at me! Aren’t I rich and famous?”

The Crazy Coloured set- Celeb owners: Kerry Katona, Sam Faiers, Chantelle Houghton

Leopard print, zebra stripes and fluorescent coloured cases are easily spotted on the conveyor belt but what sort of person chooses this type of luggage? Judi says “Attention-seeking and slightly scatty, this is the noisy, dramatic traveller who will hold up the queue while they hunt for their passport or dash off to get duty free just as boarding has been announced. They’re the zany friend you take on holiday only to wish you could tip them off the pier on day two of your break, although by the end of the first week you’ve probably given up fighting it and bought the same sombrero and fluorescent bikini and started to join in the fun.”

The Holdall – Celeb owners: Angelina Jolie, Matt Cardle, Prince Harry, Daniel Craig

Packing light is something that not many people can do but what type of passengers can fit their holiday essentials into a holdall? Judi comments: “This is the Mary Poppins of travellers, the one who manages to pack everything they need into one piece of luggage, finding space for things the rest of us forget like adaptor plugs and baby wipes, and yet still has room for a different bikini for every day of the holiday. Frighteningly practical and terrifyingly confident this optimist will tend to be the most seasoned traveller of the lot because for them it’s all about low drama planning rather than last-minute panics.“

The Corporate case – Celeb owners: Mark Wright, Cheryl Cole, Sharon Osbourne, Frankie Sanford, Wayne Rooney, Harry Styles

Stylish and understated, the corporate case is definitely the most popular choice for the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class passenger but what does this choice of case really say about the individual?  Judi comments: “These passengers know they’ve made it so there’s no need to be flashy, especially during the financial crisis when they believe it might seem crass to flaunt their wealth. There’s a very practical side to this rather focused and determined person, too, meaning a time-managed flight that includes working on the laptop or catching up on some well-earned power-napping.”

The Rucksack – Celeb owners: Justin Bieber, Chris Brown

Choosing practicality over style says a lot about your personality according to behavioural expert Judi James. Judi says: “Still living in the glory days of their gap year, this traveller is unashamedly the eternal teen, loving to imagine that they can lead the freewheeling, commitment-free lifestyle forever. They hate being pinned down or pressured into any form or responsibility and they like to think they can go anywhere the wind decides to blow them. They cherish their good causes but they can also have a tendency to be tactless or unfeeling at times, usually with the excuse that ‘I was just being honest’ or ‘I was just being myself’.

The heel-less heel

The heel-less heel

You’ve probably spotted these in the shops already as there’s nothing discreet about this latest fashion trend. Fashion designer, Giuseppe Zanotti has created the most ironic shoe in history – the heel-less heel. It doesn’t get much quirkier than this. So it’s no surprise that the ultimate ‘Queen of Quirk’, Lady Gaga has been tottering around in a pair herself. The shoe is cleverly designed with an arched platform so that the foot has full support without the aid of a heel. So because your foot is suspended on the platform, you can still achieve the same height of a standard heeled shoe. For all those who are catwalk confident when it comes to walking in heels, this is the shoe for you. Designed in a variety of styles such as metallic, suede, and even embellished with crystals, the heel-less heel is the number one stand out shoe. Here is a selection of my favourite heel-less styles:

Gold Glitter ‘Night Walk’ shoes – Jeffrey Campbell. Price £110

Giuseppe Zanotti Platform sandals – Net-a-Porter. Price £570

Beige ‘Prickly’ heels – Jeffrey Campbell. Price £140

Leopard print Calf Hair wedge – Giuseppe Zanotti. Price £760

Rita Ora has made a huge impact on the music and fashion scene with her growing success recently.
