Paris Fashion Week SS2012 RTW Catwalk Reviews

Paris Fashion Week SS2012 kicked off in style on the 28th of September 2011; Our Fashion Director Hala Di-Maio reviews some of the shows:

Balmain’s SS2012 RTW collection was Olivier Rousteing’s first ready-to -wear collection for Balmain.  Olivier introduced a touch of refined class to fitted trousers suits inspired by the wild west with plenty of tassels on sleeves and shiny metallic embroidery on leggings, jackets and miniskirts.  The young designer successfully managed to inject stylish touches to this collection without overwriting Balmain’s trademark.

Carven’s SS2012 RTW collection is best described as happy and youthful.  With bold bright yellows and blue dresses.  Leather played a big part used on high waisted shorts and skirts.  Aztec Colourful patterns were also present and so were small prints. On the whole the collection was a success, as it managed to deliver designs to a wider audience beyond Paris Catwalks.

Nina Ricci: Peter Copping designs were a tribute to Zina de Plagny, who in the 1930s had collaborated with Nina Ricci on designing prints.  As expected Nina Ricci’s SS2012 RTW collection had more of its share of sweet and tasteful florals.  We also saw playfulness in the collection with lingerie worn with skirts as an alternative to tops.   This collection would be best described as ladylike with plenty of lace, embroidery, chiffon and taffeta.

Rick Owens’ SS2012 RTW collection which showed in Paris on the 29th of September 2011, must have taken its inspiration from a time when purity was given centre stage.   His collection had a serene and religious feeling to it, with long dresses, long skirts and loose trousers.  Fabrics were natural with neutral shades.   The only exception was the addition of some accessories in the form of metallic silver leather boots.

Manish Arora’s SS2012 RTW collection had all the elements expected from the designer.  With plenty of futuristic inspirations including metallic fabrics and mini dresses.  With Rossi di Palma as one of the catwalk models, the show was given an added “je ne sais quoi” touch to it.  On the whole the designer delivered the expected with over the top designs of feathered skirts and sequins dresses.

Jackie JS Lee SS 2012 Catwalk Review

Jackie JS Lee SS2012 Catwalk Review

Inspired by the ambiguity of 1920s dressing, Jackie JS Lee’s second show at London Fashion Week explored the inner workings of androgyny at its best. The models were ethereal beauties, but the clothes that hung off them spoke a thousand manly tales. Boxy, structured blazers were juxtaposed against romantic column skirts in a largely monochrome palette.

Lee succeeded in exposing subtle bursts of delicious colour, as fabrics played with light, tone and texture. Dropped waists and blushing eyelids were striking enough for most, whilst dip-dyed dresses exuded elegance and charm. It was boy meets girl in a refreshing twist on winter’s hourglass silhouette.

Izmaylova SS2012 Catwalk Review

Izmaylova SS2012 Catwalk Review

The SS ‘12 collaboration of LOVE magazine’s Victoria Young with design extraordinaire Nathanael Izmaylova proved a wild success. A notion of 1950s good-time glamour was portrayed through tailored silhouettes, rich detailing and luxurious light-weight fabrics.

As the models departed the Izmaylova Express, heading straight for an animated audience in Freemasons Hall, the show set sail for the seas of Hawaii. The island’s warmth, colour and romanticism inspired the SS ‘12 collection as satin Duchess Gowns in shades of burnt orange, cappuccino, and midnight black sashayed their way around the catwalk space.

Izmaylova experimented with fishtail skirts, ostrich feathers, contrast panelling and avant-garde designs in the most alluring of feminine forms. It was a show to be proud of. Even the choice of vintage luggage and an antiquated wooden bench in the centre of the room spoke volumes about this Russian design duo.

LFW SS2012 Day 1 Catwalk Reviews

LFW opened with Paul Costelloe’s show which was inspired by 1962’s “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane”.   The collection featured great classic designs oozing with Parisian style.  The feminine silhouette was celebrated with beautiful dresses and skirts in neutral coloured fabrics as well as coral, pink and green.  On the whole the collection was faithful to Paul Costelloe’s timeless sense of style with a twist of the modern times.  To Watch Paul Costelloe’s SS2012 show highlights click here.

Caroline Charles SS2012 show might have drawn its inspiration from Evita Peron’s classic and chic style.  With beautiful dresses and fitted suits Caroline stayed faithful to her trademark of glitter appliques on silk and chiffon jackets and vests.   To Watch Caroline Charles’ SS2012 show highlights click here.

Stilorama magazine went backstage at the Bora Aksu SS2012 show  with Toni and Guy’s artistic team and chatted to the stylists and makeup artists before the show kicked off in style at 1.15 at the BFC tent.  Bora Aksu’s ss2012 collection was inspired by the Victorian era with plenty of lace, chiffon and see through fabrics.  Feminine corsets in shades of cream, beige and pink gave the collection a romantic and dreamy feel.  To Watch Bora Aksu’s SS2012 show highlights click here.

Felder Felder SS2012 show took a different turn this season with a softer edge designs.  The collection was feminine and sexy with plenty of sheer, lace and some metallic too. To watch Felder Felder’s SS2012 show highlights click here.

Basso & Brooke SS2012 show’s duo designers must have been dreaming about of Hawaiian Romantic Holiday when they created this collection.  With beautiful colourful floral prints on floaty maxi dresses, shift dresses and jackets; print mania at its best would describe this splash of wonderful colours: spring summer 2012 is looking good already!  To watch Basso & Brooke’s SS2012 show highlights click here.

At the Jean-Pierre Braganza’s SS2012 show, monochrome pieces took centre stage, and with long jackets over silk printed trousers was the order of the day.  Playsuits, and maxi dresses in coral and graphic prints added special touches to the show.  The collection had a minimalist feel to it, with special importance given to details and tailoring.  To watch Jean-Pierre Braganza’s SS2012 show highlights click here.

Sass & Bide’s SS2012 show was all about the art of mixing various fabrics, and about demonstrating how the elements of unusual become sweet and creative.  We saw how polka dots and sequins can be a successful melange.  This collection is not for the faint-hearted of course.  Minimalist, young and cool with an urban twist to it best describes this collection.  To watch Sass & Bide’s SS2012 show highlights click here.

SS2012 NYFW Michael Kors Catwalk Review

Michael Kors’ SS2012 fashion show was unquestionably geared towards Africa, with animal prints, and hand-dyed fabrics at the core of each design.  Earthy tones of Khaki, beige and cream was the order of the day; accessories included crocodile bags and gladiator sandals

Safari themed dresses and suede playsuits were also present and also asymmetrical dresses.   Snake skin coats, belts, boots, bags and swimwear added a luxurious touch to his playful “Afriluxe” safari adventure.  On the whole Michael Kors delivered the expected and a little bit more to his front row audience which included Zoe Saldana, Mario Testino, Rachel Zoe, and Michael Douglas.

Clarks were delighted to be asked by Mary to translate her vision into a fashion-led footwear collection that reflects their design ethos while placing style at its heart.  ‘We’ve created a collection with real fashion credentials that doesn’t compromise on comfort’ says Melissa Potter, UK Operations Managing Director for Clarks.  For Mary, Clarks are the only footwear brand with the heritage and skills necessary to deliver her vision of chic, on-trend shoes and boots designed with a modern woman’s busy lifestyle in mind. “It has long been a fantasy of mine to collaborate with Clarks” she says. “To me, Clarks’ shoes represent the best practice of British design, quality and comfort at an affordable price. It’s secretly easy to walk in all day long.”  Packaged in their own specially designed, luxury shoe box, ‘Mary & Clarks’ will be exclusively available in selected Clarks’ stores across the UK and online at www.clarks.com from 14th September.

Autumn 2011 Accessories Roundup

Come rain or shine, there be an accessory for all weathers this season. Forties glamour reigned supreme at Donna Karen, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu, with slim belts, larger than life pearls and ladylike gloves, whilst designers including Marc Jacobs and Gucci made a nod to the Sixties with a smattering of clean-cut structured accessories.   The catwalks were awash with neck candy, as the likes of Chanel, Giambattista Valli and Michael Kors exhibited an abundance of cuffs and collars. From oversized pearls, to S&M leather and glistening bejewelled numbers, there’s a style to suit all. Elie Saab’s baroque gold choker is a personal favourite, but for something more decorative opt for this outsized antique collar from Giambattista Valli.

The catwalks were awash with neck candy, as the likes of Chanel, Giambattista Valli and Michael Kors exhibited an abundance of cuffs and collars. From oversized pearls, to S&M leather and glistening bejewelled numbers, there’s a style to suit all. Ellie Saab’s baroque gold choker is a personal favourite, but for something more decorative opt for this outsized antique collar from Giambattista Valli.

Bags came in all manner of hides and hues this autumn, yet one style seemed to dominate. The mini is the antithesis of the modern working woman’s wardrobe staple. Not quite big enough to fit the kitchen sink, it is a perfectly formed version of its fashionable predecessor; the “bucket” bag, which literally did fit everything. Minis came in a rainbow palette of brights, surprisingly more suited to the summer collections. The ‘Gucci 1973’ orange lizard version is set to be a sell-out with its quaint flap fastening and double G detail. Other key pieces included a quilted black number by Dior and Mulberry’s “bright cabbage” mini Alexa, sure to be a cult favourite this year.

Moving on to footwear, this season’s catwalks demonstrated three defining styles. There were mannish brogues and loafers – still clinging onto the fashion ladder – pilgrim stacked heels, and knee high boots, perfect for autumn’s retro Sixties styling. Marc by Marc Jacobs epitomised the stacked heel trend with their two-tone lace-ups, whilst Valentino made “Editor’s Picks” with their snakeskin leather knee-highs.

Other accessories to watch out for as the nights grow shorter include gloves, in all manner of styles – wrist length, ruched and voluminous – as seen at Vera Wang and Marios Schwab, and ultra-skinny belts for every occasion. Take Oscar De La Renta’s crystal and pearl-embellished belt, for example. It is the ideal accompaniment to a lavish dinner engagement, whilst Chloé has a melt-in-the-mouth minimalist two-tone leather offering. Cinch in your waist in the new “18 hour” dress, or weave through the loops of your new Rock and Republic skinnies.
