All that glitters…

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

The nights are drawing in, the days are getting shorter and the weather has taken a definite turn for the worse. We need some serious cheering up! It’s time to bring out the most exciting garments from our winter wardrobes – sequins.

Sequins are a yearly sartorial mainstay and an antidote to winter misery: they always make an appearance on the autumn/winter catwalks, they never fail to cheer us up and they always take an outfit to new levels of glam. Every fashion-loving girl should know the value of the simple sequin; taking outfits from day to night, tea party to cocktail party and work to play, sequins are a vital component to every winter look.

This season the catwalks didn’t fail to impress in the sequin stakes, with designers such as Balmain, 3.1 Philip Lim, Alexander McQueen and Emilio Pucci providing us with a plethora of shimmering pieces. Be it just a hint of sparkle or fully sequinned, the look this season is sexy but casual.

Team opulent sequin dresses with slouchy knitwear for toned down glam, wear your skinnies with a casual sequin blazer for daytime chic and make a dazzling statement with a full-on sequinned gown. If you are feeling brave and really want to rev up your look, this season’s hottest piece is the sequin mini dress. Wear with a boyfriend blazer and biker boots for a super stylish finish.

If you are not yet acquainted to the magic of the sequin, then why not start by investing in some shiny accessories. Sequin bags and paillette heels are filling the shop shelves right now. Add them to any outfit and you’ll be ready to wow! When it comes to sequins, just remember that old adage that ‘less is more’. Keeping your look tasteful is imperative to successful sequin wearing.

It’s no wonder that sequins are a recurring trend – they really are a remedy for the malaise that sets in around this time of year. Let’s razzle-dazzle the darkness and cold weather away by uniting in fashion’s love of sequins!

Party Jewellery To Die For

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Jodie Nicole Hart picks the gems of the season to team with that showstopping party dress.

It seems everyone’s gone GaGa for gold this winter. The days of polished platinum, rhodium and palladium are well behind us, and silver just won’t cut it anymore. Instead, the hottest jewellery on the block comes in gold – with crystals, semi-precious stones, or au naturale.

Bejewelled cuffs have been all the rage this year. And Janis by Janis Savitt’s gold, turquoise and crystal number is no different. With its rows of heavily linked chain bracelets and iridescent semi-previous stones, this piece is the ultimate accompaniment to any little black dress. A mix of feminine charm and grungy post-modern punk rock, it’s one to invest in for winter 2010.

The neck, shoulders and wrists are the most erogenous parts of a woman’s anatomy, so why is it so easy to forget to decorate the earlobes? They need dressing just as much as the body. And Marie-Hélène De Taillac might just have the answer. Her 18-carat gold citrine drop earrings are chic, understated and utterly desirable. Team with a fine gold chain and Bvlgari’s quartz bracelet watch, and prepare to be showered with compliments.

New York-based accessories designer Kara Ross, now a certified Gemologist, is making waves in the jewellery world with her hugely contemporary, architectural pieces. She begun designing at the tender age of 13, and is cherished for her use of vibrantly coloured stones, unique forms and curved gold accents. For autumn winter 2010, Kara has satisfied our jewellery cravings with this single-knott gold vintage chain necklace. Simple in design, but showcasing visionary talent and modern Italian styling this piece will accentuate any neckline with its quaint knot detail and uncomplicated shape.

Another eager New Yorker currently doing the rounds is Eddie Borgo. Previously creating jewellery for Marchesa, Camilla Staerk and 3.1 Phillip Lim, Eddie’s designs bring a freshly anticipated energy to his abstract geometrical forms and the underground punk scene he is inspired by. Crystal spikes are threaded on stain ribbon, brushed gold studs affixed to bands of black leather. Eddie’s jewellery retains a certain kind of versatility. Selling in Mayfair’s unconventional Dover Street Market, and the prestigious Liberty of London, this man is already a huge hit with the press. His autumn winter ‘10 zigzag earrings in gold, with black and gold pavé crystals are set to cause a commotion amongst fashion junkies everywhere.

Homage to Alexander McQueen – Salma Hayek at Paris Fashion Week

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Lace has been gracing the runways for the past couple of seasons and it is tipped off to be a staple element of your wardrobe this winter’s festive season as demonstrated by Salma Hayek at the Alexander McQueen show during Paris Fashion Week in October. Wearing a stunning black and nude lacy cocktail dress from the Alexander Mc Queen resort collection 2011, Ms Hayek went for a look that is fresh, delicate, flirty and very dramatic all at the same time. She added a little gothic edge to her frilly dress by pairing it with opaque tights, killer leather pumps and a boxy clutch featuring a knuckle handle with Swarovski embellishment all designed by the McQueen fashion house. With such intricate detailing in her outfit, she preferred discreet and sophisticated accessories to let the dress do all the talking. Likewise, she kept her hairstyle and make-up low-key.

This pale-lilac number with contrasting black lace in the style of Ms Hayek’s will suit a fairer and cooler complexion type. Whilst Salma Hayek wore hers with a three-quarter length black coat, another option may be to don an elegant tailored velvet jacket. Indeed rich velvet is making a strong comeback this season.

Backstage Pass at LFW – Exclusive Interview with Caroline Charles

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Caroline Charles is one of the UK’s most respected and loved fashion designers. She once described herself as “A child of the 1960s”. She has designed for a number of celebrities, famous musicians and for British Royalty. With a career spanning more than four decades, Caroline Charles is considered a pioneer of British fashion at home and abroad and remains one of the leading design companies in the UK today.

Stilorama Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief and Fashion Director Hala Di-Maio caught up with her backstage after her S/S2011 catwalk show at London Fashion Week, where she chatted freely about her designs and the inspiration behind her brand.  She began by asking her about her fantastic new collection and the apparent “La Dolce Vita” theme.
Caroline Charles: The Spring/Summer 2011 is without any doubt inspired by the era from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, the mood is happy, chic, luxurious and feminine with great flowing 50s print floral fabrics, cotton piques, spots and animal prints, sequins and beads. I chose to work with various colours this season including chrome, coral, pink, oyster, black and white; shapes are also very important with emphasis on Capri pants, elegant tailored jackets, volume skirts and plenty of classical simple little black dresses.

HD: You’ve been designing clothes since the early 1960s, what still inspires you in terms of design?
CC: I draw my inspiration from fabrics and women. I think about the woman I am designing for, what she can wear, what she can afford, are the clothes comfortable and well designed. As a working mother and now grandmother, I understand the importance of elegance as well as the need to create a practical, comfortable and affordable wardrobe.

HD: Are you ever afraid of repetition when designing a new collection?
CC: Fashion is all about repetition; as a designer you have to learn how to keep innovating your designs and choice of fabric.

HD: How anxious are you before a fashion show?
CC: I always feel nervous before a show: As a team we only have very little time to make sure that everything is working right in terms of lighting, music etc…and I still get stage-fright every time!

HD: You have managed to stay on top of your industry; do you think that your success lies in the fact that you were able to build a bridge between youth and maturity?
CC: That’s a very interesting point you’re making, funnily enough, I never thought of my design in this way. When I set up on creating and designing, youth is constantly on my mind and not maturity.

HD: As a fashion designer you have kept your brand’s independence. Have you ever been tempted to become a part of a bigger fashion brand?
CC: No, never. I love the fact that I was able to stay independent, and I consider myself lucky to work with such a dedicated team also.

HD: The internet has changed our shopping habits, do you feel that the internet had a positive or negative impact on your business?
CC: Oh, definitely a very positive impact. The internet has helped the business to carry on growing and has also facilitated the way women shop.

HD: Caroline Charles, I would like to thank you for your time and for the great interview.
CC: My pleasure.
